Builded its pictures. There before our eyes

Curled upwards into pillars, roses climbed,' b* |- D( c) n- H) e8 X: A
And ramped and were confined, and clustered leaves4 i; Y5 S8 G) c0 Y5 P# n
Divided where there peered a laughing face.1 s; d; m7 {& T
The foliage seemed to rustle in the wind,- C1 N. q% ?8 v# s0 N
A silent murmur, carved in still, gray stone.

- l3 V" Y6 k5 O" Z3 ^! ? Whence proud escutcheons flung prismatic fires

- m4 z+ w1 r+ V+ p5 H, {+ W- C With pools of red, and quivering green, and blue;
* I, q, I2 T L% S! A And in the shade beyond the further door,8 G3 I( U6 i" h
Its sober squares of black and white were hid

The Christening.

About the entrance parted as the guests6 S! z4 h9 P. V2 n, ]! a3 X1 E
Filed singly in with rare and precious gifts.2 v- Z3 C7 F! `0 Z
Our eager fancies noted all they brought,; G4 B, k' E% @; j( H
The glorious, unattainable delights!
* Z8 i9 U* v' _5 W) X But always there was one unbidden guest
) ] c% T( q, X# _& }& @ Who cursed the child and left it bitterness.
/ y9 x3 R( j6 k6 h- [* P: h The fire falls asunder, all is changed,
- B8 B' g0 w; T# |8 i ?& j I am no more a child, and what I see9 f9 s0 \9 U1 i0 D3 K3 T- R$ N( v
Is not a fairy tale, but life, my life.

* Y& u; c* K; g; _1 c8 p6 { Health, wealth, long-settled friendships, with a name H5 a1 S, N0 _3 [% k" D. h5 f0 A7 h
Which honors all who bear it, and the power9 m3 B2 [$ l8 N1 a. d
Of making words obedient. This is much;6 i: \; i6 _ g
But overshadowing all is still the curse,4 E) X5 o3 P: o) ^, I
That never shall I be fulfilled by love!+ _7 S* g; J1 s$ K! q1 q# v
Along the parching highroad of the world6 a! ~; Z0 u; J; \
No other soul shall bear mine company." j. \. T, G( _ h
Always shall I be teased with semblances,, s0 h+ z3 s9 }4 H+ `4 h+ }
With cruel impostures, which I trust awhile
/ l8 y' \7 V9 S& ?$ c1 j) {, \' U Then dash to pieces, as a careless boy
z6 Z! p7 h( |. M9 @ Flings a kaleidoscope, which shattering

Of broken, dusty glass. And so, unlit,
